I think the nature of the content will help determine the rate you should charge.

If it's opinion/features (as on salon), then that would command a higher rate than, say, humor pieces on the onion.

If it's national/fn news (ala money.cnn.com), that would differ than local news (masshightech.com). I suspect local rates would be higher, unless you are writing for wsj.com.

If you have to do simple HTML coding that should not increase your rate any. Most sites, I hope, expect that.

In any event, you should go for a flat fee. does this site have a sister/meatspace publication like a newspaper or magazine? If so, then you should get those rates.

Another thing that will affect the rates is the readership level. Is it 1M hits/day or 1K? Big difference.

In short, there is not enough information in your message to make a valid suggestion.

Hello all,

I'm going to be writing for a site and I'm trying to figure out what/how to
charge. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Do you charge by the word, by
the page, by the hour? What if it includes some simple HTML coding? Do you
charge for that separately? Any good resources out there for this? I tried the
archives but with a search for "rates" the most recent post was in 2000. Another
search term, maybe?

Any help is greatly appreciated!
Rhina
