I work in MS Word and I use the highlighter for things I need to verify. It is easy to spot in the document and it also shows up when it is printed. I also insert notes to myself and enclose them in double angle brackets, for example <<waiting for verification from Joe on the function of this widget>>. I highlight these as well so that they stand out.
