Honestly, you're the parent, and you're trying to get him to do something he doesn't want to do. You're in for a fight. Ahhh, kids! ;-) Are the books you mentioned targeted at 12 year olds? Maybe a different, more creative approach is needed....what's that approach? I don't know! :-(
