Framemaker 7 is not ignoring the spaces and carriage returns in my imported XML data. The import works well except that it brings in the spaces and carriage returns that should be ignored (and are ignored by IE).

Has anyone else experienced this? Is there a setting I have overlooked? Read/write rules?

No - but,then, I haven't imported anything.

However, what I have noticed is that (like many GUI tools for markup languages, including ones like FrontPage), FrameMaker 7.0 produces very messy code with little white space and tags placed on the same lines as content. I suppose the assumption is that you won't be working with the raw code, but it looks as though the program doesn't handle markup languages in the way that anyone with experience would expect.

As an aside, this sort of code annoys me, because, if I ever work with it directly, it's harder to locate the tags. I've had a basic notion hammered into me: whether you're working in a markup language or a programming language, use the white space to organize your work.

The last time FrameMaker 7.0 was discussed on this list, another list member mailed me privately and said that, after trying it, he had gone back to using emacs for his XML/SGML work. I think I'll follow his example.
