I myself was laid off last month. Despite a somewhat depressed job market in
Toronto (although things are picking up a bit), I got 2 interviews at 2
companies and would probably have had 1 or 2 more but received an offer
after less than one month of searching. I'm not trying to brag - I only have
4 years experience as a writer - but feel I have a good resume and good
interviewing skills, which are critical.

I agree with Andrew that a good resume and good interviewing skills are critical, now more than ever. But also "only having 4 years experience" is a plus. It is enough time that you can show you know what you are doing, but you are still mid-salary. I had one technical writer tell me she had left off ten years of her resume, because of her perception of age discrimination. Having 19 years myself, I have considered doing that, but don't feel comfortable with "not being myself". I was wondering what some other techwriters are doing about it.....

I have faced obvious age discrimination in past job searches and dropped the first 20 years off my resume.
I am trying to draft a good functional resume that emphasizes what I can DO rather than what I have done ;)
