Watching this thread unfold leaves me wondering:

Is age discrimination real? Or are those of us who are middle-aged simply watching ourselves in a mirror?

Even though participants in the thread have been joking, their comments suggest that many of us are dismissive of those younger than ourselves. I'm no different; I've had to repress a few jokes of my own on the subject.

But I wonder whether we see ourselves being dismissed simply because, with our hostilities towards those younger, we expect to see the same hostility reflected back at us.

At any rate, while at 25, we might dismiss an unsuccessful job application as bad luck, or a poor fit, now we're quick to assume that the reason is age discrimination.

I'm not saying that age discrimination doesn't happen in the profession. But I do wonder how often we see it when it isn't there.
