A small amendment...
You do have to be an STC member to join the SIG, but you do NOT need to be a member of the SIG to participate in the email discussion list.

This point is of particular interest to me at the moment, as I am coordinating the efforts of the Rochester Chapter to organize chapter-level SIGs. Each chapter SIG has to deal with the same question--whether to require a person to pay for STC and Society SIG membership before participating in the local SIGs. Some do, some don't. We haven't decided yet.
