Pilot Speak/Navy Speak Acronym ALDIS

I'm stretching for a tech writing tie in here, and the only thing I can come
up with is that I work as a writer in the Flight Simulation community.

Recently, while reading through some docs and stories, I came across the
word ALDIS.  This is in reference to landing gear being down and locked.
The tower (or other ground members) may indicate to the pilot (who has no
form of radio communication) that the landing gear is down and locked using
the ALDIS lamp.

Is ALDIS and acronym or abbreviation?  What does it stand for?

It may just be the type of lamp, or even a company.  I have not exhausted my
resources yet, but I have checked several acronym websites and the
associated NATOPS manual.  I thought I would let you fellas have a crack at
it.
