Well, yes, it is linear. But when all is said and done if you've setup your navigation routines properly you'll be able to jump around the presentation in whichever order you want.
Whichever tool you use the information is going to have to be layed out in some kind of order to start with. The benefit I see to Authorware is that it can keep track of where you've been and suggest (based on logic you define ahead of time) where to go next. No matter how the presenter chooses to go through the material they'll be going down one of some finite number of linear paths. We just want to give them as many paths to choose from as possible.

The lowest common denominator of what were talking about here is hypertext. Afterall, wasn't the big deal about hypertext the ability to go through the information as you chose, instead of begining to end, as is with static (printed) text? But Eva asked for tools, so I offered one up.

These are all good ideas, storyboarding, multiple paths, links, etc.,
but it all sounds linear to me.
