When I had an actual editor, he wasn't my manager, but
he was my editorial superior. That's what editors are
for-- not to provide an opinion that the writer can
choose to ignore. The editor knew the house style
inside out, and if he said to change something, it had
to be changed.
I also wasn't the last person to have my hands on the
file. If I refused to make a change, it would get
changed anyway and I'd be "spoken to" (this never
hapened, but it would have). I didn't have the option
of releasing the doc without the editor's approval.
