Yes, most graphics professionals use Macs. That said, all of the software you will ever need or want is also available on the PC. I deal with CMYK all day long on the PC without difficulty. I'm not saying the Mac doesn't have a better color model; I understand that it does. But a PC monitor can be calibrated reasonably well, and the on-screen version is always just an approximation. That's what PMS books are for.

Further, I think there is a wide-open niche that someone could fill by going the PC route. People like me who are responsible for graphics in a corporate environment (read: NT network, Mac-unfriendly) have to deal with outside vendors on a regular basis. I can tell you that when a vendor blames me for sending them a file they can't interpret properly on their (implicitly superior) Mac, I am not a satisfied customer. I look for vendors who say, "PC? Sure, we can do that." And those vendors are few and far between.

So I'd recommend that your friend consider doing DTP for corporate clients who share my frustration with Mac snobs.
