This sounds like a phenomenon I've run into occasionally, although I've
usually seen the table running off the right side of the page rather
than the left.
You might try selecting the column that's running off the page, and then
sizing it manually using the commands in the Table menu. (In Word 2002,
you'd select Table > Table Properties; then select the Column tab and
type in a new column width. I don't have Word 97 in front of me anymore,
but I think it's Table > Column Width and Height.) I usually make it 1
inch wide and then resize it with the mouse once the column edge is
visible on the page.
