Learn as much as you can before the interview. Two years ago, I made the jump from writing automotive manuals in the defense industry to writing software documentation (what I had really wanted to do in the first place) in the semiconductor industry. It took me about eight months (and that was in a better economy) and a lot of time studying various programming languages to the point where I felt comfortable reading the code and figuring out what it does.
