I'm not familiar with that law. Every tech writing gig I've had has been
salaried. In each case, when I accepted the job, I signed a lot of
paperwork, which explained to me that I was on a salary, not an hourly
wage, that I was expected to work 40 hours a week, that if I ever had to
work more than that I should not expect extra compensations, etc. In
return, I would make a nice salary and receive a nice benefits package.
And nobody was forcing me to take the job.
That's always been just fine with me. And I believe you can to a large
degree control the amount of OT you get sucked into. I keep OT to a
minimum, only occasionally burning the midnight oil in an extreme crunch.
I've seen people become doormats, by always putting in extra hours, but I
make it a point to leave after about 8 hours each day. Nobody will ask you
NOT to work overtime - it's up to you to control your schedule.
