Jim Schaefer began his excellent suggestion with:
"Back when I taught Macintosh computing skills, Apple
had a great interactive tutorial that took people
through the basics."
Apple also has an outstanding tips page geared to
explaining interface issues to programmers who are
experienced with Windows development. Its points about
interface consistency are definitely worth noting at: http://developer.apple.com/ue/switch/windows.html
There are some other good interface resources on the
Internet that can teach you and your interface
developers a great deal. For example, there's the
links page of "the Interface Mafia" at http://www.interfacemafia.org/links.html.
Finally, it's educational to check out the "Interface
Hall of Shame" to see examples of very *bad* interface
design issues...and embarrassing to discover one that
*your* application is using! See it at http://www.iarchitect.com/mshame.htm.
It's fascinating to see what others have done to
improve computer interfaces, and you can get many
worthwhile ideas by perusing resources like these.
And, by the way, interface usability IMHO *should* be
one of the things we can help improve as part of our
work as tech writers!
