One of the advantages of a portfolio for an interviewer is that they are a good way to focus discussion so that you can look for traits like the ones you're looking for. As the interviewee talks about the pieces in the portfolio, you can almost always get the answers you want without asking questions.

However,using or not using them in the hiring process is mostly just a matter of personal preference.
