I served on two award committees for a schoarly society, and I've been nominated for a couple of awards of different kinds. After these experiences on both sides of the question, I've come around to the view that awards are rarely worth the effort that anyone puts into them.

Nowadays, I'll enter a contest if the prize comes with money. Otherwise, I won't bother. Nor do I judge any more. I've more or less come around to the view that the only judgement that matters is that of your clients (or employer) and your audience.
