Interesting thread. Here's a few observations:

The term "communication" doesn't imply the information being communicated is
right or wrong. It's just the act of communicating. In that sense, the STC's
name is not misleading at all.
I've heard a first-hand account of an STC award-winning doc that was
technically inaccurate.
If I want to discuss content, I have my industry. The SMEs, sales, customer
support, trainers etc in my company can all relate and assist, there's also
industry-related organizations. If I need to discuss layout, grammar, style,
etc though, I need other tech writers. That's you! (And some of you are STC
members.)
I agree that real users of the document should also be included as judges.
Who's opinion could be more important?

Anyway, I really see nothing wrong with the contest, how it's awarded, or what
it's named. Then again I've never really cared much for contests of any sort.
Even in the most ethical of organizations there's bound to be a rotten apple or
two.
