In 556 (and probably 6), the sequence is:

File > Import > Object > (browse to file to import) > select "Link"
checkbox > OK

I just tried it with 556 and an Excel 2000 spreadsheet and it imported
with no problems. Of course, I don't have any macros in the
spreadsheet, and it's all text, so YMMV.
