What distribution of Linux are you using? I use Debian GNU/Linux. All I had to do to install the tools I needed was type "apt-get install sgml-tools" on the command line.

Read this article: http://lwn.net/2000/features/DocBook/

And this one: http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/docs/HOWTO/other-formats/html_single/DocBook-Demystification-HOWTO.html

Another one: http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/docs/HOWTO/other-formats/html_single/DocBook-OpenJade-SGML-XML-HOWTO.html

I started reading the O'Reilly DocBook book, and
basically broke my Linux by trying to install
the tools that I *think* they were trying to tell
me that I need, so I didn't get very far.

Also, that book seems to be aimed at all the UNIXes
at once, so it's not clear which tools are needed
or even what they are called for Linux.

I need to just:

a) write a book (product manual)

b) print it and create a PDF of it

c) maybe make an html/xml version

I'm a lone writer at a company that's still using
Windows, but that is investigating a move to
Linux. That "lone writer" bit means that I don't
have a department of specialists and experts to
fall back on. Experimenting must be done in my
non-existent "spare" time, and at my expense.

Is there a big Linux DocBook HowTo somewhere
that I've missed in all my googling?

What are the advantages -- to a lone writer --
of going with OpenJade and DSSSL, as opposed to
XSL style sheets... For that matter, is "opposed
to" the right way to think of it?

Is OpenJade a complete solution? Or do you need
to surround it with 27 other tools in order to

a) do the work
b) make some usable output

Could you supply a detailed description of
what you do to make a document happen using
DocBook and OpenJade? From typing the first
word (in what editor?) to picking up your
output from the company color printer and
smiling at the loveliness of it all?

Does anybody on the list use DocBook/XSL?
What does your workflow look like?
