No, you're not required to have all the files open. But any errors in those
files (e.g., missing fonts, wrong FrameMaker version) can cause problems
when you update the book. If you open all the files first, you can bypass
those errors (although you should go back and try to fix them). Plus,
opening all the files makes the update go much quicker in my experience.

hi friends,

Iam not able to update the book file in Frame Maker7.0 with the newly
added .fm files without keeping fm files open. Is it required to keep
the files open while updating the book or is it a glitch in FM?? Can
anyone throw some light upon this?

The crucial point is that FrameMaker needs to be able to open all files in the book to be able to update it. There are two ways to achieve this:

- If the files are all already open, there is no problem - they are open, they stay open, FrameMaker can access them.

- If some files are closed when you give the update command, FrameMaker tries to open them 'behind the scenes'. It can do so only if opening a file does not produce an error message. Typical causes for error messages are missing fonts or unresolved cross-references.

These error messages that prevent successful updates show up when you open the offending file manually. As Rick said, it is best to resolve the underlying problems, but if you cannot do so, you can also open all files manually (dismissing the error messages) before updating the manual.

Jan Henning
