In the course of this discussion, the opinion has come up that the US 
has the strongest economy in the world because of the fundamental setup 
of the economy.

This is at least debatable: Adjusting for size of the population, the 
economies of Denmark, Sweden, Finland, and Switzerland are all stronger 
than that of the US. All of these countries base their economies on 
significantly different principles than the US does.

It is therefore entirely possible that the amount of influence that 
unions have is not a decisive factor for the economic strength of the 
US.
