Those centuries also produced manuals for letter
writing, good manners, and household management for
the newly prosperous middle class. These "courtesy
books" were probably even more like technical manuals
that those mining books (De Res Metallica, for
example.
But perhaps that's more history than the original
poster is actually looking for. :)
