Setting aside how off-topic this is, why aren't technical writers more
skeptical of what they hear or read? This alleged court case is
fictional... see <http://www.truthorfiction.com/rumors/onlyinamerica.htm>
for example, and other clearly nonsensical posts have appeared here
before.

I've worked with numerous writers accepted blindly whatever a developer
told them (or what they thought they heard from a developer), even if it
didn't make sense (and I would say so to them, only to be told that the
developer had said it, so it had to be true). The writer never checked it
out, so the nonsense was documented, at least in the first draft. A
little more checking would have cleared the whole matter up.

There's more similarity between tech. writing and journalism than most
people think, and the need to verify your sources (with a dose of healthy
skepticism) is one of those similarities.
