If writing instructions for equipment users,
I would probably write "Press and hold the
button" or perhaps "Press the button and do
not release it until xxx"

A lot depends on the language skill level
you are writing for. 

I would stay well away from "keep the button 
down" because "keep" has too many unrelated 
meanings,  "down" comes too late in the instruction, 
and "button down" sounds like you're talking about 
shirts.
