I think the argument is as ridiculous as the space after a period.

If you're careful when defining the actual headings, then why change them
for the TOC? Just make them the same and save everyone even the slightest
grief.

If there is a "better" form, it should be used in all cases, not just in the
TOC or actual heading, and the argument, then, is a waste of time.
