Actually, I'm surprised that STC competitions even register on your priority list ;-)

Seriously, talking about fonts is an indulgence in one sense. It's a brief foray into aesthetics that I enjoy as a break from other professional concerns - and I'm not ashamed to say so. I just don't let that indulgence distract me too long from other concerns.

However, what your priorities don't take into account is that fonts are a means to some of the higher priorities. Used knowledgably, they can enhance usability, which isn't on your list, but probably should be. They can also sell more products by making documentation easier to use and establishing a company brand.

But, in the end, my attitude towards writers who dismiss the importance of design is the same as my reaction to writers who won't learn more than they absolutely have to about their subject: let them do things their way; there's more money for me.

Still, it's a shame for them, that their attitude prevents them from making a better living,
