TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
Self-publishers need to distinguish between on-demand PUBLISHERS (who
generally put their own brand name and ISBN on the book, and often do
layout as well as printing) and on-demand PRINTERS (who typically take a
PDF or Quark or other file and print from it). Either type may do
fulfillment (print the book and send it to the purchaser) and/or some
publicity such as getting a book listed on Amazon.com or other online
bookshops.
On-demand printers who do fulfillment (and placement in online bookshops)
are a wonderful resource for self-publishers who want to retain control
over their books. I am one of those self-publishers. I have several reasons
for choosing not to attempt to be published by a "real" publishing house,
given that my target audience includes a lot of people who are used to the
concept of useful, quality self-published software.
Of course I can't rely on the printer or publisher to do all the marketing,
but my many author friends who do use "real" publishers say that they can't
rely completely on their publishers either; the authors do a lot of their
own marketing.
I've had no experience with Booklocker, although I did look at them a
couple of years ago. I don't want a publisher, so I passed them by. I've
only recently found a service that I think suits my needs, at Lightning
Source, which handles both e-books and on-demand printing for a reasonable
price.
