In my response below, I never said I was proficient with ABC Flowcharter...I
never even said I'd used it. I said I could create flowcharts with it.

I interviewed with a cosulting agency a few years ago, and the interviewer
asked me how familiar I was with interleaf. I told him that I'd never heard
of interleaf. I expected that that would pretty much end my consideration,
but the interviewer thanked me for my honesty, and said that he used that as
a question to see who was lying. Seems that many people would say that they
were proficient with it.

Apparently Interleaf is a somewhat arcane tool with an enormous learning
curve. This guy said he could tell in one or two questions if a person knew
interleaf or was BS-ing. He said I was the first candidate he's talked with
in two days that answered that question honestly. He was refreshed.

| Now...my take on honesty is to pick #1, even though I'm
| thinking #3. I know
| I can do it, even though I haven't before. Am I lying? I
| don't think so...in
| fact, I think I'm being honest. The question wasn't "Have I
| used it.", even
| though I kinda know what they mean. OTOH, the honesty purist
| might take door
| #3 and hope that the interviewer hasn't heard this
| explanation before and
| the person they hired fell on their face.
