There are far more covert, and generally more successful ways I'd think, to handle bullies then by starting a brawl. The welding story is a good example. I guess the only point I was trying to make long ago when I first brought up the whole "bullies only understand pushing back" issue was that _sometimes_ that's the only option left, whether it be to protect your dignity, honor or life. But it's dangerous, socially, emotionally and phsyically depending on the nature of the situation. And yes, there are some people out there who are just cracked. Those are the ones you need to keep an eye out for.

Tech writer tie-in, learn the subtle art of manipulation for navigate through the waters of the workplace. Don't call in the third fleet unless there's good reason, no other option and you are willing and able to handle the fallout.
