I've always considered a blog to be literally a web log, or a bunch of links
(interspersed with light filler content) that represents a log of stuff a
person has found on the web that may be of interest to a certain audience.
While a blog may be a person's own personal site, including links to funny
or interesting things they've found while browsing the web, it could also be
a resource focused on a specific project, cause, group, or other interest.
For example, someone could have a blog about linux development for a certain
package, and include links to other articles and projects on the web as they
appear.
I've always thought the distinction between a journal and a blog is that a
journal contains more content and less links. Journals are largely
personal, but they can have a more specific purpose. Travel journals,
journals documenting a project, and even diet journals can be found all over
the web.
