Here's my comment, from Australia. I always hesitate when I see a field
named "Title" because I'm often not sure whether it means "Honorific" (a word I
would never use in real life, by the way) or "Position/Job Title". Usually I
can guess from the placement of the field in the form, but not always, and from
the experience you cited in your original note, apparently that isn't a
sufficiently unambiguous cue.
If you have room on the interface, I recommend what others have suggested: give
an example. Otherwise, "Job Title" should make the meaning clear. "Position" is
a common term in Australia, but as you and others have noted, it's far too open
for smart-alecky responses.
