TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
Two reasons (not that I necessarily agree with them) that I know of:
1) Lots of HR types believe that credit rating is an indicator of likelihood
of honesty on the job.
2) Highly regulated financial industries HAVE to do them. Blew me away the
first time I went through one, but it didn't seem to hurt anything.
Privacy? What privacy?

Subject: RE: credit check for interviews
Oh yeah, that has been a BIG sore spot with me. What right do they have to
check that and just what in the world does it matter? If I have blemishes on
my credit report, does that mean I do not do my job? Sorry, but I don't see
the relation. I can understand the criminal background check but whether or
not you pay your bills on time? Geez, someone explain that to me.
