Not only that, but QA always seems to get the blame for software not being released on time, no matter how well managed the project might be. It's important to have solid QA processes, such as release criteria that are agreed upon by the development manager and a good defect priority system. Not every bug has to be fixed before release, but the entire team needs to be clear on which ones are showstoppers, and which ones they can live with.

Be sure you know what is expected of the QA group, and you, regarding how defects are handled. Usually, QA is only responsible for testing the products against specifications (providing you have decent specs) and then identifying the defects. The Product Manager and Development Manager can then decide whether/when to release.

Be prepared for pressure unlike anything you may have encountered as a tech writer!

With the staff reductions prevalent in the software industry, it's easy for an undersized QA group to become a bottleneck in the release process.
