And pop up pages to edit further details of entries. These
pop up pages also use "Save" and "Cancel" buttons, dropping you back into
the lists of entries. A concern is that if I use "Save" for applying changes
to each line, I'm compromising the functionality of "Save" (and close) for
the pop-up pages. Does that make sense?

I'd say that depndes on what exactly the button on the pop-up page does: If clicking it writes all changes to the database, then it does the same thing that the Save/Modify/Edit button in the record does. Consequently, it should have the same name as well.

If, on the other hand, the button in the pop-up window only closes the window, and actually writing the data to the database requires clicking the Save/Modify/Edit button, the button in the pop-up window should have a different name, e.g., OK.

Regards
Jan Henning
