Visio is good for things like hierarchical charts and diagrams - as long as
they are reasonably straight-forward and simple. Otherwise, if you're
thinking of doing lots of work in this area, then you may want to consider
Corel's iGrafx Flowcharter (same price as Visio) - or other such dedicated
software. Even better, would be to create your own symbols in either
Illustrator or CorelDraw. That's if you have the time, and are not
artistically challenged.

I should add that I have Visio 2000, which I use infrequently, and it's
probably the reason why I find it's ok to use. I've heard from coworkers
about problems doing more than the basics with it, and Visio had (has?) a
nasty habit of sometimes lock-up on you. Add to this ... that Visio is
definitely not outstanding when it comes to the stencils provided within. In
this case, there are some products that have stencils that are far better
... but plan to pay more $$$.
One word of warning, if the intended use the software's charts for print
media - nothing affects credibility more, than opening a book, or manual,
and seeing a diagram straight out of Visio.
