I most definitely concede this point, and indeed it is a case of a computer allowing you to do something. While there may be more graceful ways to put it (and y'all covered that), the bottom line is that the computer grants you access based on the data you provide. This is a special case - saying MS Word *allows* me to create a TOC is not the same.

To say that "entering the secret password allows you to enter the Pentagon
database" is not imprecise, insulting, formally incorrect, nor guilty of
using unecessarily baroque language.
