No one else mentioned it yesterday, so I'll suggest TeX (LaTeX is part of the TeX family). 

TeX is arguably the best type-setting software available, especially if you are using a lot of mathematical expressions in your document.

Does anybody have a free- or shareware software product they like for
notating mathematical formulas? I've Googled, but I'm looking for
testimonials.

I rarely need to do this, so I don't want an expensive solution. But it
would be nice to have the ability to create complex mathematical formulas
without spending hours formatting them in Word.
