This statement was true a few years ago. Now, if it's not obsolete, they're quickly becoming so.

I mentioned a few days ago that IBM and HP between them claim that they did several billion dollars' worth of open source business between them. Granted, this isn't much compared the total business done by these corporate giants, but considering that three years ago they did practically none, it does represent tremendous growth.

Similarly, while the adaptation of open source technologies by a large company tends to be trumpeted by advocates, it still seems to be happening. Large financial companies like Merril Lynch are coming on board, and, on the opposite end of the scale, many smaller and new companies are using open source technologies to ramp up quickly.

What's uncertain is not whether companies will adapt open source, but how large the trend is going to be and how long it's going to last. The trend hasn't peaked yet, and it could still be a passing fad rather than a major realignment.
