Check out the ANSI standard Z535 suite of standards for standard note,
caution, and warning icons and criteria. [I know, that's a lot of
"standards," but it's early in the morning.]

For an interesting excursion into the area, also check out "The Deadly
Follies of Stick Figure Warning-Man and Family" at:

Subject: Re: Warning, Caution, Note symbols/icons

Scott (and other interested parties),
The general consensus is that Europe is much more aware and puts more
emphasis on using the equipment manual to properly warn than what we do
here stateside and therefore has greater latitude in using ISO 3864 as a
warnings standard. They also tend to address a greater multiplicity of
languages in the international environment than what we do, making text on
warnings quite cumbersome. ISO 3864 has adopted a symbol only (no text)
universal pictorial standard. That standard is NOT recommended for use
here in the USA, as the ANSI standard still requires text with the
pictorials and would take precedence over ISO standards in a legal tiff
<per tort law>. The pictorials that are used in ISO 3864 are consistent
with ANSI pictorials, but would require additional warning text.

In a nutshell, you will get all that you need by way of graphics, colors,
and overall layout from these five ANSI standards :
ANSI Z535.1
ANSI Z535.2
ANSI Z535.3
ANSI Z535.4
ANSI Z535.5

There is pitiful little knowledge and education available on liability/tort
law issues as it pertains to us in the writing field. Since it does fall on
us to address it, sooner or later, it can leave you feeling like you are
floundering at sea without a sail. Hope that this has helped you get
something of a more strudy grip on the matter at hand.
MN Mary
