That depends on the kind of image. If you save a typical photograph as a
GIF and as a medium-quality JPG, the GIF will be larger. If you save a
typical screen capture as a GIF and as a medium-quality JPG, the JPG
will be larger. JPG compression is less efficient in handling straight
edges and large fields of color, while GIF compression is less efficient
with subtle gradations.
JPG also doesn't handle pure white or pure black very well -- so if you have large fields of white (like most GUIs do), GIFs tend to handle it better. (Plus, GUIS have a lot of straight lines, etc..)
