I liked the quote:

They aren't working for free...they're simply paying for training (and
experience) on their own, just as if they were going to school.
Case in point. For some small systems, our CTO is starting to look at Linux.
Several of the developers are doing OpenSource work on their own during
lunch and after hours as a way of gaining experience should it become a
serious consideration. Shoot...I'd be looking at documenting something
OpenSource if I could come up for air.
