The answer is the same whether you included your work history or not. You
may be good, but you'll be better if you learn more about the technology.
I've understood Andrew's basic message to be this:

All things being equal, the excellent writer with subject matter
expertise will always be a better technical writer than the excellent
writer who depends on the SMEs for information.

I don't understand how anyone can argue that their writing wouldn't be
improved by becoming as technically educated as possible in their field
of writing. Since when is less knowledge a virtue?
