I'm almost in complete agreement with AP on this one. Science, sports, art, etc. writers do have extensive backgrounds in their fields. You try trashing or lauding Yoyo Ma's latest performance without credentials. You can't with and relevance - no matter how well you write. In other words, there's a difference between an amateur and a professional.

But Andrew says,

Thus, software writers should have software development experience,
biotechnology writers should have biology experience/education,
telecommunications writers should....you get the idea.

I have to disagree a little bit here. A software writer working on end-user manuals needs experience *using* software - presumably in the same category. To write about chemical weapons disposal verificatiion software, you probably want to know a little bit about disposal of chemical weapons, or at least chemestry. (My contribution to the NO WAR thingie...) Page layout software wants experience with page layout. It follows that if you want to write about software *development* software, you should have experience with software development.
