Someone here--I think it was Bruce Byfield but it's possible I'm crediting the wrong person--posted ample historical precedence, dating to at least the 15th c. IIRC, for the use of _they_ as a singular pronoun. He convinced me, and I've been following that practice ever since, without even a twinge of compunction.

So here we have, at once, a positive response to the meta-question asked earlier today (yes, I was convinced by a written argument that the position I had previously held was wrong), and a data point in response to your query.

Not the best sentence ever inked (ethered?), but it illustrates my
point. I guess my real question is whether or not the usage above has
gained any momentum in the past year or so or is this still a sticky
subject that has several solutions?

she/he
he/she
s/he
he or she
and so on and so on and so on
