Someone here--I think it was Bruce Byfield but it's possible I'm
crediting the wrong person--posted ample historical precedence, dating
to at least the 15th c. IIRC, for the use of _they_ as a singular
pronoun. He convinced me, and I've been following that practice ever
since, without even a twinge of compunction.
