I use "they" as a gender-neutral singular. I think using "she" is the
worst choice because it is distracting--even for female members of my
audience. Remind me again why we need gender-neutral language? I wonder
how the French are handling the 21st century in this regard, has there,
for example, been a move to neuter those nouns that folks don't want
associated with their particular gender . . . maybe women don't like the
fact that chance is feminine, for example?
