Over drinks, we can all agree to disagree. In fact, cold sober,
I'll tell you I think that the historical justification for
the singular "they" is baloney. In the literary quotations
that people come up with, the antecedents of the singular
"they" are overwhelmingly words like "everyone" and "anyone"
and other notional plurals.

But at the workplace, I would never agree to a gender-neutral
"he". Not because I feel strongly against it, but because in
any large readership, some of the readers are likely to feel
offended and there's no use trying to explain that they're
wrong to feel that way.
