<<Most car seats are installed by some jury-rigged strapping
method using seatbelts designed for a human body, not a car
seat. The auto engineers should work together with the car seat
vendors, with a little regulatory encouragement if necessary.>>
Actually, this is already being done. In many new cars you'll now see two little
car seat logos at each rear seating position that includes the new system
"ISOFIX".
The current concern delaying the introduction of actual ISOFIX car seats in
Canada is that the regulators are worried that users won't attach the tether
strap that is still required for best safety. European car seats seem to never
have had tether straps.
For parents looking for help, one of the biggest pains in correctly installing a
seat is getting the tether strap as tight as possible. One easy upgrade is to so
away with the standard adjustment clips and replace them with a ratcheted strap
tensioner. Before tensioning the tether, ensure the lap/shoulder belt is as
tight as possible. Two people should do the istallatation with the heaviest
person leaning/kneeling on the child seat and the other person
tightening/securing the belt.
