Gang,
Many (most?) of you received spam over the
weekend from an Indexing service, and some indicated
that the only place the address could have come
from was TECHWR-L. Sure enough, and here's the
response from this company (I've deleted their name
because I don't think they need any additional PR.)
I'm satisfied it was an honest--if unfortunate--mistake.
(They scraped addresses from the Web site--the list itself
was not compromised.)

On behalf of Example.com and myself, I apologize for the
entire situation whereby we inappropriately used names from
the TECHWR-L list and site to for commercial purposes. We
recognize that we have spammed your members in
their private area.
I will guarantee that this will not happen again. It was
meant to be a product introduction and nothing more. We
are just a small company in Minnesota, that never had any
intentions of selling the names or reusing
them, nor have we done so.
We do intend to continue to try to improve Example, on an
ongoing basis and to sell the Indexing service to the
Technical Writer. If there are opportunities for paying for
advertising, I am the right person to contact.
If you need additional assurances, I will give them to you.
